The formation of chlorine dioxide in acid chlorite baths is repressed by the incorporation of the chloride, sulphate, chlorate or salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid with 1 to 3 carbon atoms, such as the acetate, of ammonia, and a sulphonic acid and/or carboxylic acid or salt thereof, containing an aliphatic radical of at least 8 carbon atoms interrupted by a carboxylic acid amide or ester group, and which may be oleyl sarcoside, oleyl methyl taurine, oleyl taurine, oleyl methyl amino acetic acid, stearyloxymethane sulphonic acid, stearyloxyethane sulphonic acid or the reaction product of a carboxylic acid with a protein degradation product. The bath may also include hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, phosphoric acid, bisulphates, orthophosphates or pyrophosphates for adjusting the pH and nitric acid or a salt thereof to avoid corrosion of stainless steel. Bath temperatures of 60 DEG C., 70 DEG C. and 75 DEG C. and pH values of 3.3 and 3.4 are described. Solid compositions and concentrated aqueous solutions of the ingredients are also described. The examples describe the bleaching of viscose rayon fabrics. |
