An apparatus and a method for controlling a cassette of an image forming apparatus are provided to prevent paper from being folded or jammed due to a difference of paper transfer rate between cassettes while transferring papers on the cassettes. An image forming apparatus comprises a main controller(220). The main controller constructs paper transfer function information, which is set at plural option cassettes, and operable information of the image forming apparatus according to paper transfer rate. The main controller checks the operable information of the image forming apparatus when an image forming operation is started. In case that the image forming apparatus is in an operable state, the main controller performs the image forming operation. In case that the image forming apparatus is in a non-operable state, the main controller outputs an alarm message to a user while waiting for the image forming operation.
