Environmentally friendly electroless copper compositions are provided to obtain copper deposit acceptable for industry by using glyoxylic acid as a substitute for formaldehyde. Environmentally friendly electroless copper compositions comprise at least one source of copper ions, at least one thiocarboxylic acid, glyoxylic acid and salts thereof, and at least one alkaline compound to maintain the compositions alkaline. The thiocarboxylic acid is expressed as a formula of HS-(CX_1)_r-(CHX_2)_s-COOH. In the formula, X_1 is -H or -COOH. X_2 is -H or -SH, and r and s are positive integers. R is 0 to 2, or 0 or 1. S is 1 or 2. The environmentally friendly electroless copper compositions comprise at least one complexing agent, carboxylic acid, surfactant and antioxidant.
