A device 8 for insertion in the conduit of a vehicle hydraulic brake system, which leads to the rear wheel brake cylinders, has the effect of reducing the pressure transmitted to the rear wheel brake cylinders in relation to that transmitted to the front wheel brake cylinders. The reduction takes place as a result of the action of a stepped piston 18. Pressure fluid supplied to connecting pipe 13 passes straight through to connection. 14, past valve 34, and along bore 32 and through radial passages between ribs 30 and radial openings 48, until the pressure differential across the stepped piston is sufficient to cause it to move against spring 37 and close valve 34 upon its seat. The condition is represented by the point marked I on the graph of Fig. 4. Thereafter the pressure rise for the rear wheel brake cylinders is represented by the line III, as compared with that for the front wheel cylinders represented by the line II. Reduction of braking effect on the front wheel cylinders is advantageous for reducing wheel lock due to the weight distribution resulting from forwards movement of the C. of G. during retardation.</p>
