The light emitting diode (LED) has an indium gallium nitride chip (2) whose primary radiation is converted into a longer wavy radiation by a conversion unit. The conversion unit is formed by two separately arranged luminescent substances. One of the luminescent substances emits a red and another luminescent substance emits yellow to green. The former luminescent substance is alone directly applied on the chip and whose layer thickness amounts to 40 micrometers.
