To control the stress in the leading edge portion of a glass sheet or sheets G while on a bending mould 10 conveyed at a given velocity through a lake including a region of glass softening temperatures, the velocity being such that the sheet(s) would ordinarily develop a tension stress adjacent the leading edge with the strain substantially greater than 100 millimicrons per inch, a stress modifying member 50 is maintained adjacent to the leading edge with a portion 52 slightly in advance and another portion 54 slightly below the leading edge whereby the maxmum tension stress in the portion of the bent glass sheet(s) G adjacent the leading edge results in a tension strain substantially below 100 millimicrons per inch The mould 10 comprises end sections 21 and centre section 17 with leading and rear rails 18, 19 braced by a bar 20, the end sections 21 pivoting about brackets 26 under the influence of counter-weighted levers 22. The member 50 is secured to the leading rail 18 by a threaded rod 56 with a link 58 secured to rail 18, the rod 56 pressing through a tab 62 on rail 18 and secured by a lock nut 60 for adjustment of the member 50 vertically in relation to the rail 18. The mould 10 is provided with end heat absorbing members 30, central absorber plates 36 and additional heat absorber plates 38, 39 and 40 adjacent the trailing side rail 19.</p> |
