A display apparatus is provided to display still images having sufficient brightness by driving a hold type display panel in impulse or normal modes. A display apparatus includes a display panel(10), gate and data drivers(12,14), a timing controller(16), an input unit, an impulse driving controller(20), a selector(24), and a motion detector(22). The display panel includes pixels at pixel sections defined by gate and data lines. The gate driver enables at least adjacent two gate lines when plural gate lines are sequentially enabled. The data driver supplies pixel driving signals for one line to the data lines when at least one of plural data lines are enabled. The timing controller controls the operation timing of the gate data drivers. The input unit is used for inputting video data to be supplied to the data driver. The impulse driving controller inserts the black level data for one line into the video data. The selector supplies selectively the video data from the impulse driving controller and input unit to the data driver. The motion detector detects whether the video data is still images and controls the selector based on the detection result.
