When a brake application is made, the line of brake application pressure (P) plotted against time (t) rises steeply from zero to a maximum value. After a very short period of constant pressure, the pressure is rapidly reduced to a lower value and then oscillates about a mean value. The frequent reductions in brake pressure prevent the wheel skidding and locking up. The oscillations may be controlled by an ABS system. The initial pressure rise on applying the brake may be modified to make the initial pressure peak lower and broader.
