An IPS(In-Plane Switching) LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device and a manufacturing method thereof are provided to enable a retarder layer to make a bulk liquid crystal layer have a minimum transmission rate in a black mode by compensating a leakage of light, thereby reducing black brightness and a contrast ratio. An IPS LCD device comprises an upper substrate(100), a lower substrate(200), a liquid crystal layer(300), an upper alignment layer(110), and a lower alignment layer(210). The lower substrate forms at least one pair of a common electrode(231) and a pixel electrode(232) which are disposed in parallel to each other and apply IPS. The liquid crystal layer is formed between the upper substrate and the lower substrate and is composed of a retarder layer(320) contact with the inner surface of the upper substrate and a bulk liquid crystal layer(310) in the lower part of the retarder layer. The upper alignment layer is formed in the inside of the upper substrate to contact the retarder layer. The lower alignment layer is formed in the inside of the lower substrate. The retarder layer is aligned in a direction matching the alignment twisted angle of the bulk liquid crystal layer. |
