The device e.g. double-deck food baking-oven (1) has an area for handling food, a door (4) to close the area, and a drive (6) e.g. electric motor, for moving the door from an opening position into a closing position. A sensor (9) e.g. distance sensor and photo sensor, is provided outside of the handling area for detecting an object in front of the door. The sensor is coupled with the drive and transmits a signal to a controller (15), which controls the drive, if the object is detected close to the door. The controller operates the drive for opening the door upon receiving the signal.
