A cellular communication system comprises a base station (12, 112) in a communication cell (10, 110), one or more terminals or handsets (14, 114) one or more relay transceivers (18, 118) in or adjacent to said cell and arranged to relay signals (20, 22; 50, 52; 64, 56; 58) between the base station and the terminals. The signals between the transceivers and the terminals are omnidirectional mobile telephone signals in the GHz range and the signals between the base station and the transceivers are preferably directional signals in the millimetre or microwave range, but may be lower frequency signals.
