The method involves providing an instrument (3) with a reference arrangement (1) that comprises a set of markers, where the arrangement of the markers at the reference arrangement forms a rigid body. Distance of the markers from each other is measured by a medicine-technical, optical tracking system (7). The marker arrangement with the measured distance for the markers is identified as an allocationable marker arrangement. The marker arrangement is assigned to the instrument, and the instrument is identified by a medicine-technical navigation system (10).
