A reel (1) of welding wire, comprising a central hub (2), side plates (3) and a coil of welding wire (4) wrapped around the hub, has fixing system(s) mounted on the side plate(s) for receiving and holding the free end (5) of the wire, so that the free end is prevented from uncoiling from the reel. An independent claim is included for a welding wire drum supplied with wire from a reel as above.
