PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical ceramic and a refractive, transmissive or diffractive optical element prepared from the optical ceramic. SOLUTION: The optical ceramic and the optical element are constituted so as to be transmissive for visible light and/or for infrared radiation. The optical ceramic wherein single crystallite in the crystal forms a cubic structure of the type Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is prepared using a crystal mixture having the cubic structure of the type Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and selected from the group consisting of In<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>or Yb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>and a mixture of two or more oxides of the type X<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>(wherein X is selected from the group consisting of Y, Lu, Sc, Yb, In, Gd and La). The optical element prepared from the optical ceramic is particularly suitable for use as a lens system in combination with lenses of glass, but also with other ceramic lens, in particular also in the field of digital cameras, mobile phone cameras, microscope, microlithography, optical data storage or other applications in the field of consumer or industry applications.
