PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner formed so as to be able to suppress lateral swinging of a chain or a chain guide with the cost of inside components such as a seal member suppressed. SOLUTION: In this chain tensioner, a nut member 13 is incorporated in the cylinder chamber 12 of a housing 11, and a sawtooth-shaped male screw 16 formed on the periphery of the rear end part of a rod member 15 is threadedly engaged with a sawtooth-shaped female screw 14 on the inner periphery of the nut member 13. Outward projecting property is given to the rod member 15 by a return spring 17 incorporated in a cylinder 11. A cap 19 having a diameter corresponding to the width dimension of a guide groove 8 formed in the chain guide 6 is mounted to the tip part of the rod member 15, and the chain guide 6 is prevented from laterally swinging by contact of the cap 19 with the side of the guide groove 8.
