PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for file-based configuration of a document output device using a file which contains hardware specific information during document rendering operation. SOLUTION: After receiving electronic document data and instruction data from a related workstation, DEVMODE data are retrieved from an XML data file. Thereafter the instruction data are compared with the DEVMODE data to determine if the DEVMODE data are required to be changed so that the document output device incorporates the instruction data into an output of an electronic document. When the DEVMODE data are required to be updated, data stored in the data file are used to generate a new DEVMODE structure associated with the document output device. The new data are used at a later time for outputting the electronic document incorporating the instruction contained in the instruction data. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
