PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for allowing a photographer without any special knowledge to photograph an image using an optimal imaging quality parameter suitable to a scene to be photographed. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus comprises a data table for defining and storing a plurality of photographing modes and parameter control characteristics, a control means for controlling an image pick-up system based on control characteristics corresponding to a photographing mode stored in the data table, a user interface means for selecting a plurality of photographing conditions, and a photographing mode determination means for selecting and determining an arbitrary photographing mode among the photographing modes. The photographing mode determination means selects and determines an optimal photographing mode based on the plurality of photographing conditions selected through the user interface means. The control means acquires control characteristics corresponding to the photographing mode determined by the photographing mode determination means from the data table, and controls the image pick-up system so as to let a photographer to choose a photographing mode without straying.
