PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wheel bearing device capable of solving the conflicting problems: one is to make the device light and compact, and the other is to make it highly rigid. SOLUTION: In this wheel bearing device having a third generation structure in which an inner ring 6 is fixed by a caulking part 9, the pitch circle diameter PCDi of an inner side tapered roller 4 is set smaller than the pitch circle diameter PCDo of an outer side tapered roller 3, a large collar to guide the tapered roller 3 is not formed on the larger diameter side of the inside rolling surface 5a of a hub ring 5, a large collar 14 is provided on the larger diameter side of the outside rolling surface 2a of an external member 2, a cone-shaped recess 15 is formed at the end part on the outer side of a hub ring 5, its depth extends beyond the groove bottom part of the inside rolling surface 5a of the hub ring 5 while reaching the vicinity of a shaft-shaped part 8 and the wall thickness of the hub ring 5 is set in a prescribed range, and a prescribed hard layer 16 is continuously formed by induction hardening from the base part 7c of a wheel mounting flange 7 to the vicinity of the caulking part 9 in a small diameter level part 5b through the inside rolling surface 5a and the shaft-shaped part 8.
