PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and a control method thereof capable of suppressing image signal information from an imaging element from being damaged by the clip processing while avoiding a dynamic range of an input signal to an ADC circuit from being limited beyond necessity. SOLUTION: A signal level of one horizontal line is detected (step S205). A black signal level being a clamp level or less may exist in the detected signal because of the effect of a sag in a horizontal direction. Whether or not the image signal information from the CCD is damaged due to the effect of the sag in the horizontal direction is discriminated by the clip processing of the ADC circuit (step S206). For example, whether or not part of the input signal has a level of a predetermined reference value or below is discriminated. The reference value used herein is a value smaller than, e.g. an average of the black signal levels. When the discrimination indicates that the image signal information is damaged, the processing returns to a step S203, and the signal level by the one horizontal line obtained in the step S205 is referenced and a target value is revised.
