PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head which can suppress PTP (Pole Tip Protrusion) without impairing the heat dissipation effects. SOLUTION: It has a lower core layer 21 and an upper core layer 34 facing each other leaving a space in the layer thickness direction and the upper core layer 34 is connected to the upper magnetic pole layer 26 regulating the track width. The thickness H2 of the front surface 21b of the lower core layer 21 is made smaller than the thickness H1 of the rear section 21e over the whole area.
