The device has a driving device displacing a front- or engine hood from a normal position into a raised safety position. A mechanical force limiter includes a clamping body (20) that clamps the hood between two walls (111, 121) during lowering movement from the safety position towards the normal position. The body supplies a force that counteracts clamping of the body between the walls, where the body is designed as a ball or a rolling unit. The body between the walls is arranged in a wedge-shaped recess (60).
