[Also in Group XXIX] A method of making a gate valve comprises stamping one end of a sleeve into a frustoconical form, piercing in the sleeve two openings to house end tubes, closing the opening at the formed end and fixing on the opposite end a head-piece comprising a device for controlling an adjustable gate positioned between the ends of the end tubes, the other ends of which permit the coupling of the valve to a pipe system. A valve body comprises forming one end of a cylinder 21, of e.g. stainless steel which is positioned on a former 3 and supported by a sleeve 23 into a frusto-conical shape using a female co-operating die 2, drilling two holes 24, increasing the hole sizes and forming flanges 27 by drawing a ball 25 screwed to a shaft 26 through the hole and stamping a flange 29 having an annular groove 31. The hole 22 is closed by means of a plug 28 secured by welding or by force fitting and seam welding. A flange 34 is welded to one end of a tube element 33, the other end of which is bevelled and a flange plate 35 is secured to the flange 34 by a ring 36 welded in position. A head-piece 37 and a seal 41 are located and retained by an annular rib 38 engaging with the slot 31. A gate 42 may be operated by a known controlling device comprising a sliding rod 43 guided by forks 44 which bear against a pair of columns 45. A nut 47 is rotatably mounted inside bearing plates 48 carried by the columns and is rotated by a hand wheel 46. One end of the rod 43 is attached by its threaded portion 49 to the nut whilst a pair of prismatic members 52 are attached to the opposite end and fit against the bevel edged openings 32 of the end tubes. The end tubes are adjusted to the members 52 and welded to the flanges 27.</p> |
