An electrical connector (100) includes a dielectric housing (102) having a cavity (108) configured to receive a mating connector therein and a contact subassembly (110) having an array of contacts (118). Each of the contacts (118) define a mating interface (120) configured to engage the mating connector, and each of the contacts (118) have a beam portion (172) extending downstream of the mating interface (120) to a contact terminating end (174). Contact plates (136) are arranged within the cavity (108), such that each of the contact plates (136) engages a corresponding one of the contacts (118) at the beam portion (172) of the contacts.
