None-platform-specific method and/or system that facilitate the navigation through the content of large images, independently of their dimensions and the dimensions of the display area. The embodiments can be stand-alone and/or client/server, based on the physical location of the images. The method and/or system involve an optional image creation system comprised of a production component (800), and transformation component (810). Sections of the source images or produced data files are then used by an image navigation system, which includes: an initialization component (900), a navigation component (910) to receive input from the end user regarding the desired motion (zoom, pan, and/or rotate) and direction (top, bottom, left, or right), an image retrieval component (920), and a display component (930) that reduces the image section retrieved, combining it with the on-screen image, if necessary. The navigation process repeats itself for every input received by the navigation component (910).
