The device has a sensor (10) for detecting an opened condition of a tank cover (2), and a locking unit (15) actuatable by a control unit (12) for locking a motor vehicle door. The locking unit is operable by the control unit during detection of the opened condition of the tank cover by the sensor in order to lock the vehicle door, where the control unit is designed as electronic control unit and the locking device is electrically actuatable. The locking unit is designed as a unit with children safety function. An independent claim is also included for a method for avoiding damage of a tank cover.
