<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical recording medium capable of high-density recording having a rewritable multilayer phase-change optical recording layer, and a method and apparatus employing the optical recording medium. <P>SOLUTION: A mark is recorded into a Kth recording layer by using a laser to irradiate the Kth recording layer using a recording pulse train including a plurality of laser beam pulses. The recording pulse train satisfies the following two expressions: t<SB>(1)</SB><t<SB>(M)</SB>and t<SB>(k)</SB>≤t<SB>(k+1)</SB>(except for K=M), where the recording pulse train for the Kth recording layer has a cycle of t<SB>(K)</SB>[T], the 1st recording layer is the recording layer closest the laser beam, and the Mth recording layer is the recording layer furthest from the laser beam, and T is a clock cycle.
