PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device capable of surely conveying Z-folded sheets and sheets with pleats by a simple structure. SOLUTION: The driving of a lifting means M1 is controlled by a control means. A sheet feeding means 101 is moved to a standby position above a sheet loading part 120 or a sheet feeding position in contact with sheets D loaded on the sheet loading part 120. Whether the sheets D loaded on the sheet loading part 120 have Z-folded portions or not on the upstream side in the sheet conveying direction is determined by a determination means. When the control means determines that the fed sheets D are Z-folded ones by the information from the determination means, it so control the driving of a lifting means M1 as to raise the sheet feeding means 101 to a retreated position between the sheet feed position and the standby position so that, when the sheets D are fed, the Z-folded portions can be guided by the sheet feed means 101.
