A method of listen before talk operation in a wireless system comprising at least one reader (R1, R2, R3, R4) comprises the or each reader listening for transmissions on a channel (CH4, CH10) for a period of time and comparing channel power with a threshold to determine whether a channel is available. If the channel is available, an identifier (SDI) is transmitted from a first reader to other members of a group of readers, indicating that the channel is available for re-use by the other members. The identifier is a predetermined system identifier allocated to all readers in the group of readers.
