A method for purifying 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by hydrogen reaction is provided to improve the purity of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid to the level such that it is used as a starting material for preparing polyethylene naphthalate. A method for purifying 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by hydrogen reaction comprises the step of injecting a gas in an amount calculated quantitatively by the mathematical formula represented by the hydrogen demanded amount (g/hr) = CNDA injection amount (g/hr) x [ FNA content (%) x 2H2 /200 + (Br - NDA content (%)) xH2 / 295 + polymer component content (%) x 1/2H2 / 216 ] / 100, the mathematical formula 2 represented by the inert gas demanded amount (g/hr) = [ 0.0894 + 0.10413 x exp(-0.0238T) x Q (kg/hr) x P (atm) ] - [ hydrogen demanded amount (g/hr) + alpha ], and the mathematical formula 3 represented by the gas demanded amount (g/hr) = [ hydrogen demanded amount (g/hr) + alpha ] + inert gas demanded amount (g/hr) into a hydrogenation reactor to remove formyl naphthoic acid, naphthalenecarboxylic bromide and a polymer component, wherein CNDA is crude 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid; FNA is formyl naphthoic acid, Br-NDA is naphthalenecarboxylic bromide, T is a reaction temperature, P is a reaction pressure, Q is a solvent flux, and alpha is the variation according to activity and lifetime of a catalyst.
