Non-gelling water-soluble detergent compositions are obtained by neutralizing with an amine the sulphonic acid obtained by sulphonating an alkylaryl hydrocarbon with sulphur trioxide, and subsequently adding thereto a minor quantity of an amine sulphate. Suitable amines which may be used both to neutralize the sulphonic acid and in the amine sulphate are mono-, di-, and tri-ethanolamine; mono- and tri-ethylamine; mixed isopropanolamines; and n-butylamine. The composition is generally compounded as an aqueous composition, and usually contains amine sulphate in an amount of about 5 - 15% by weight of the sulphonic acid to be neutralized.ALSO:Triethanolamine dodecylbenzene sulphonate is obtained (see Examples 1-3) by neutralising with triethanolamine the acid obtained by sulphonating dodecylbenzene with sulphur trioxide, sulphuric acid or oleum; if excess sulphonating agent is used, the amine sulphonate formed on neutralisation prevents the mixture gelling (see Group III). |
