PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device of an automatic transmission, which enables range changing operation in the case of a failure by mechanically connecting a selecting lever to a selecting position changing device, and can improve a degree of freedom of layout by making the selecting lever compact, and further can achieve the selecting lever operating force characteristic suitable for a requirement. SOLUTION: A controller 3 comprises an FB control section 31 for calculating a first drive command value so as to decrease a relative displacement, an observer section 32 which estimates a variation in the load of an assist actuator 2 from the first drive command value and an operating position, and calculates a second drive command value for canceling the effect of the variation in the load, and an adder 33 for calculating a final drive command value from the first drive command value and the second drive command value.
