PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure of a continuously variable transmission capable of switching mode between low speed mode and high speed mode quickly and smoothly. SOLUTION: A controller for the continuously variable transmission has a function for starting letting-in of a clutch for high speed being released until then (starting current-carrying of a solenoid valve for the clutch for high speed) before a speed change ratio of this toroidal continuously variable transmission to be adjusted in accordance with a running condition at the time (a target speed change ratio corresponding to the running condition) reaches a value being the optimum for switching mode (A point, for example, by acceleration ratio of 0.46), namely, at B point (for example, by acceleration ratio of 0.60) to achieve satisfactory mode switching.
