An image device capable of receiving external data and a control method thereof are provided to search for specific data which a user prefers more easily and download files related to an image device system and upgrade of the image device system quickly and simply. A method for controlling an image device capable of receiving external data comprises the following steps of: determining a kind of at least one external device connected with the image device(S603); determining a specific display type to which files stored in each memory of the external device belongs(S604~S605); and distinguishing information about a kind of an external device of storing a file belonging to a specific display type in the memory and information about a kind of an external device of not storing the file belonging to the specific display type in the memory, and displaying the information simultaneously on an OSD(On Screen Display)(S605~S611).
