An illuminator having a luminance distribution whose nonuniformness near LEDs is improved without degrading the overall luminance and used as a frontlight or backlight and a liquid crystal display using the illuminator are provided. The illuminator (10) has a light source on the light entrance surface (27) of an optical waveguide (20). The feature of the invention is to use the illuminator (10) having the optical waveguide (20) in which a prism (25) for polarizingly reflecting or outputting the light from the optical waveguide (20) is formed on the exit or reflecting surface and a cylindrical lens (26) for distributing/spreading the light is formed on another surface. |
