An apparatus and a method for controlling recording in an image display device are provided to enable a user to select whether to continue or stop recording by sensing a recording interruption factor generated during the recording and notifying a user that a recording function is interrupted. A key input unit inputs a user request instruction. A memory stores a recording stoppage condition generated during recording if a user sets program recording through the key input unit. A control unit(102) controls a corresponding program to be stored in a storage medium(126) according to the request of the user, grasps and notifies the user whether a condition corresponding to the recording stoppage condition stored in the memory occurs, and controls the progress of the recording according to the selection of the user. A display unit(136b) displays the progress of the recording in an OSD(On Screen Display) shape according to the control signal of the control unit.
