The invention concerns the selective oxidation of propane into acrylic acid using highly selective catalysts and relates more particularly to a process for preparing these improved catalysts and their use for the production of acrylic acid from propane. The improved catalysts having the formula: Mo1Va(Te and/or Sb)b(Nb and/or Ta)cSidOxwherein a is between 0. 006 and 1, b is between 0.006 and 1, c is between 0.001 and 0.5, d is between 0 and 3.5, and x is dependant on the oxidation state of the other elements, are obtained by adding a doping agent constituted by at least one component selected from Nb and Ta to a mainly orthorhombic phase prepared by hydrothermal method of a Mo-V-(Te and/or Sb)-O mixed metal oxide, optionally containing Nb and/or Ta and/or Si.
