PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element hardly degrading in luminescent characteristics. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element has a transparent electrode 4 formed on a transparent substrate 2; an inorganic layer 6 having an opening 6a for specifying a pixel region formed on the transparent electrode; an organic luminescent layer 8 formed in the opening and on the upper face of the inorganic layer at an opening peripheral edge part 6b; an upper electrode 10 covering the upper face and side faces of the organic luminescent layer while being a counter electrode to the transparent electrode; and a protective layer 12 for covering the upper face and side faces of the upper electrode.
