The method for determining the loading of oxygen storage catalytic converters for IC engine exhausts comprises passing a stoichiometric exhaust gas mixture through the catalyst and measuring a known change in emissions downstream from it. The signals from a lambda probe connected to the catalyst are used in conjunction with the change in emissions to calculate differential loadings for hydrocarbons and NOx.
