An automotive piston engine (2) has valves (3) that open and close in response to spring (16) action. The springs form part of a stationary catch arrangement (12) with a catch ball (21) that operates essentially transverse to the valve stroke. The catch ball is presented between the spring and valve. In the closed position the ball engages with a valve stem sleeve contact surface (27). The catch arrangement consists of a cylindrical detent (12) with a housing (15) for the spring (16). The spring is a pressure spring (17) that engages at one end with a pin (21) extending from the housing (15), and in a socket (14) at the other (19).
