<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus not producing troubles in the front and back of the large image fixing roller pair largely changing the peripheral speed when shortening the transfer path or bending it for miniaturization, such as image noises, transfer noises, magnification misalignments, color shifts in color images, and abrasions by the guides. <P>SOLUTION: The image fixing unit is made movable upstream or downstream in the transfer direction and moved by detecting the amount of the loop or the transfer speed at the fixing unit. Further, providing fixing unit moving means at both its sides and loop detectors at both ends of the transfer path, the fixing unit moving means are independently controlled when the loop amounts are different in the width direction. The loop produced by the transfer speed variations of the recording sheet in the fixing unit between the secondary transfer (transfer section to the recording sheet) and the fixing unit is kept constant without controlling the speed of the fixing unit.
