A method for improving the image quality of a television is provided to compensate for irregular gray scales by using video signals input according to channels and store a gray scale compensation value as a setting value of each channel, thereby providing a uniform screen image at any channel. It is determined if a channel is changed(S10). If the channel is changed, a gray scale compensation value is read out from a memory(S20). Gray scale compensation is performed while improving image quality based on the gray scale compensation value and then it is determined if the gray scale compensation value is changed. If the gray scale compensation value is changed, the changed gray scale compensation value is stored in a memory(S50). The maximum gray scale compensation value and the minimum gray scale compensation value are found according to horizontal lines in one frame, and the mean value of the maximum gray scale compensation value and the minimum gray scale compensation values is calculated, and the offset value is found according to the minimum value.
