A semiconductor memory device and a method for generating a core voltage thereof are provided to recover voltage drop at a core voltage port in an auto refresh mode rapidly. An internal voltage generator(100) generates an internal voltage by using an external voltage and a ground voltage. An internal voltage divider(200) generates a reference voltage of a first level and a second level by dividing the internal voltage with different dividing ratio in response to an auto refresh signal. The second level is higher than the first level. A core voltage generator(300) drives a core voltage port with a voltage level corresponding to the reference voltage.
