The present invention is directed at a process for the stereoselective preparation of reduced hydrocarbon compounds, in particular chiral alcohols, starting from oxidized hydrocarbon compounds such as, for example, prochiral ketones, by means of isolated enzymes, in particular ketoacyl reductase from phototrophic organisms. The invention is furthermore directed at an isolated enzyme and/or the cloning of the enzyme-coding DNA sequence into an expression vector and expression of the enzyme in a host cell, and at an enzyme isolated from phototrophic organisms and at a composition comprising such an enzyme for the preparation of reduced hydrocarbon compounds.
