PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ignition coil for an internal combustion engine for performing multiple discharge, by simultaneously using positive polarity voltage and ordinary negative polarity voltage, when starting current-carrying conventionally cut by a diode. SOLUTION: An igniter for the internal combustion engine has a primary coil, a secondary coil, a laminated iron core of magnetically joining its two coils, and a switching element for generating a high voltage current on the secondary coil side by controlling ON/OFF of an electric current flowing to the primary coil, and is provided with a current-carrying stopping means for stopping the current-carrying when the electric current flowing to the primary coil reaches a specified current value by detecting the electric current flowing to the primary coil. Since multiple ignition is performed, a discharge interval is shortened, and intensive multiple discharge can be performed.
