The method involves measuring a temperature (T1) of air inlet in upstream of a mixture zone (7) of the inlet with a gas exhaust circulating in a recycling circuit. A temperature (T2) of gas exhaust circulating in the circuit is measured in upstream of the zone. A temperature (T3) of a gas mixture in the zone is measured, where the temperatures are measured using temperature probes (8-10). An exhaust gas recirculation rate is estimated from the measurement of three temperatures. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine having recycling circuit.
