<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phosphor affording a white LED (light-emitting diode) having excellent light-emission efficiency using a blue LED or an ultraviolet LED as a light source. <P>SOLUTION: The phosphor is characterized as follows. The phosphor consists essentially of an α-type sialon represented by general formula (M1)<SB>x</SB>(M2)<SB>y</SB>(Si,Al)<SB>12</SB>(O,N)<SB>16</SB>äwherein, M1 is one or more kinds of elements selected from the group consisting of Li, Mg, Ca, Y and lanthanide elements (except La and Ce); M2 is one or more kinds of elements selected from the group consisting of Ce, Pr, Eu, Tb, Yb and Er; 0.3≤X+Y≤1.5; and 0<Y≤0.7}.
