PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe and convenient personal authentication system. SOLUTION: The personal authentication system comprises a plurality of client computers and an authentication computer connected to the plurality of computers. The authentication computer assigns, upon receipt of an authentication request from the client computer, a telephone number receivable by the authentication computer to the client computer that is the transmission source of the received authentication request. The authentication computer specifies, upon receipt of dialing, a transmitter telephone number of the dialing and an incoming telephone number, specifies a user corresponding to the specified transmitter telephone number in reference to user information, specifies a client computer corresponding to the specified incoming telephone number in reference to authentication telephone number correspondence information, and determines that the authentication is requested by the specified user in the authentication request received from the specified client computer.
