A high-precision magnetic encoder in which high-order harmonic components can be suppressed without increasing the number of lead wires from a field detection element to a signal processing circuit. Hall sensors of phase A<SUB>1</SUB>, phase B<SUB>1</SUB>, phase A<SUB>2</SUB> and phase B<SUB>2</SUB> are arranged sequentially around a permanent magnet (2) at an interval of 90° through air gaps. Hall sensors of phase C<SUB>1</SUB>, phase D<SUB>1</SUB>, phase C<SUB>2</SUB> and phase D<SUB>2</SUB> are arranged at positions respectively 60° away from the hall sensors of phase A<SUB>1</SUB>, phase B<SUB>1</SUB>, phase A<SUB>2</SUB> and phase B<SUB>2</SUB>. Connection is made between the positive output terminals of a set of Hall sensors located at positions 60° away from each other and between their negative output terminals.
