A universal remote controller and a controlling method thereof are provided to configure plural product selection buttons on existing keys when the universal remote controller supporting a lot of products is developed, thereby reducing the size of the remote controller as simplifying design. A product selection key(110) performs a function of selecting an electronic device to be remotely controlled among plural electronic devices, or a function of generating a signal which notifies of mode conversion to the corresponding product in advance. Function/product name keys(131-136) conduct one of key functions for remote controlling, depending on whether the product selection key is selected, and functions for selecting the electronic device to be remotely controlled.
