An apparatus for preventing a driver from falling asleep at the wheel by using a face recognizing technique and a system thereof are provided to make a server used for preventing drowsy driving notify a traffic office of a current location of a car via a GPS according to severity of drowsy driving. An apparatus for preventing a driver from falling asleep at the wheel by using a face recognizing technique comprises a camera(102), a user registering unit(104), a face image acquisition unit(106), a face image reader(110), a drowsy drive analysis unit(112), a drowsy drive alert unit(114) and a GPS(117). The camera(102) captures an image of a driver face when the driver drives a car. The user registering unit(104) stores and manages a vector template of the driver's face wherein the driver is the user of the apparatus. The face image acquisition unit(106) converts an analog image of the driver's face, which is captured by the camera(102), into a digital image stream and stores the converted digital image stream at a memory. The face image reader(110) generates the vector template of the driver's face from the digital image stream stored at the memory by using a face recognition technique. The drowsy drive analysis unit(112) compares the vector template of the driver's face, generated by the face image reader(110) with that, stored at the memory and checks whether the driver falls asleep. The drowsy driving alert unit(114) outputs an alert content if the driver falls asleep. The GPS(117) traces a location of the driver.
